Fever in children: when to worry and when to see a doctor
Last reviewed 2026-09-24
My child has a fever — when should I worry?
A fever is 38°C (100.4°F) or higher. Any fever in a baby under 3 months, or fever with lethargy, breathing difficulty, a rash that doesn't fade, or signs of dehydration needs same-day medical review.
At home
- Offer plenty of fluids; ORS if there is diarrhoea
- Light clothing, rest
- Paracetamol only at the dose your doctor advised for your child's weight
- Never give aspirin to children
When to see a paediatrician
- Any fever under 3 months of age
- Fever lasting more than 3 days
- Fits, stiff neck, rash that doesn't fade when pressed
- Fast or difficult breathing, very drowsy, no urine for 6–8 hours
