Last reviewed 2026-09-24
What should my child eat every day?
Breastfeed exclusively for 6 months, start thick energy-dense foods at 6 months, give toddlers 3 meals plus 2 snacks, and for school-age children aim for 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, 400–500 ml milk or equivalent, and little added sugar.
By age
| 0–6 months | Only breast milk (or formula); no water needed |
|---|---|
| 6–12 months | Mashed dal-rice, khichdi, fruit and vegetable purees 2–3 times a day plus breast milk |
| 1–5 years | 3 family meals + 2 snacks; include iron (dal, green leaves, egg), calcium and vitamin D |
| 5+ years | 5 portions fruit/veg, whole grains, protein at every meal, 400–500 ml milk/curd |
Common gaps in Indian diets
- Iron — pair dal and greens with vitamin C (lemon, amla)
- Vitamin D — morning sunlight; ask about supplements
- Protein — add paneer, egg, sprouts, curd
When to see a paediatrician
- Weight not increasing for 2–3 months
- Extreme fussiness with only a few foods
- Signs of allergy: rash, swelling, vomiting after a food
